Refugee Air is an Artist in Residency Programme organized in Kyläsaari Asylum Seeker´s Reception Centre in Helsinki, Finland. Kyläsaari Reception Centre accommodated around 200-300 people daily. The centre provided basic services for the duration of the asylum procedure. The institutional atmosphere of the centre were inhibitive and many residents didn’t move out from the centre actively. The centre was closed down in 2012.
Refugee Air brought together socially engaged artists to carry out projects with the residents of the reception centre. The aim of the project was to provide asylum seekers opportunities to use creativity in processing their experiences, to meet new people, and to transmit their thoughts to wider audiences in Finland. Ten artists and one philosopher participated the project, each hosting one individual project or workshops in the Reception Centre.
